A1: An oil pump is a mechanical device used to create a vacuum in order to draw oil from the lower reservoir to the upper, where it is distributed to various parts of the engine and other system components. It works by having a rotor, driven by either a hydraulic or an electric motor, spin within an outer body to create a vacuum, thus drawing oil up from the lower reservoir into the upper.

A2: An oil pump is made up of an outer body, an inner rotor, a relief valve, intake screens and a high and a low pressure spring, amongst others. The purpose of all of these components is to generate enough vacuum to draw oil from the lower reservoir up to the upper one, whilst filtering out any contaminants that may be present in the oil.

A3: An oil pump should be serviced according to the owner's manual recommendations, or once a year if there is no recommendation given. Regular servicing of an oil pump will help to preserve the working life of the oil pump and ensure that it is operating correctly.
