History of the VW Touran

The Volkswagen Touran is a compact MPV (multi-purpose vehicle) that was first introduced in 2003 as a practical and family-friendly addition to Volkswagen’s lineup. Built on the Volkswagen Golf’s platform (PQ35), the Touran was designed to offer a spacious and versatile interior while maintaining a compact footprint for urban driving. It quickly became popular in Europe, where MPVs were in high demand for their practicality and efficiency.

The first-generation Touran (2003–2015) featured a boxy design focused on maximising interior space, with seating for up to seven passengers. It was available with a variety of petrol and diesel engines, including Volkswagen’s TDI diesel technology, making it an economical choice for families. Over the years, the model received several updates, including a significant facelift in 2006, which introduced a new front-end design in line with Volkswagen’s corporate styling at the time.

In 2015, Volkswagen launched the second-generation Touran, built on the MQB platform, which it shared with models like the Golf and Passat. This version was larger and lighter, improving both interior space and fuel efficiency. The design became more modern and streamlined, featuring LED lighting, a digital instrument cluster, and advanced safety features such as adaptive cruise control and autonomous emergency braking. The second-generation Touran continued to be available with a range of TSI petrol and TDI diesel engines, offering both manual and DSG automatic transmissions.

Over the years, the Touran remained a strong contender in the MPV segment, despite the growing popularity of SUVs. However, as consumer preferences shifted towards crossovers and SUVs, Volkswagen gradually scaled back its MPV lineup. The Touran remains in production, particularly in Europe and select global markets, where demand for compact yet spacious family vehicles persists. Its blend of reliability, practicality, and modern technology has cemented its place as one of Volkswagen’s most successful MPVs.
