History of the VW Passat

The Volkswagen Passat is one of Volkswagen’s most enduring and successful models, first introduced in 1973 as a midsize family car. Over the decades, it has gone through multiple generations, evolving from a simple, practical sedan into a refined and technologically advanced vehicle. Competing with models like the Ford Mondeo, Toyota Camry, and Honda Accord, the Passat became a global bestseller, particularly in Europe, North America, and China.

First Generations (1973–1996)
The first-generation Passat (B1, 1973–1981) was based on the Audi 80 and featured a front-engine, front-wheel-drive layout, which was a shift from Volkswagen’s traditional rear-engine, rear-wheel-drive setup used in the Beetle. It was available as a two-door and four-door fastback, as well as a station wagon (Variant). The second and third generations (B2, 1981–1988; B3, 1988–1996) introduced larger dimensions, more powerful engines, and better aerodynamics, with the B3 adopting a more rounded, modern look.

Modernisation and Global Expansion (1996–2014)
The fourth and fifth generations (B4, 1993–1997; B5, 1996–2005) saw the Passat become more premium, incorporating Audi-derived technologies, improved safety features, and turbocharged and V6 engine options. The sixth generation (B6, 2005–2010) introduced more advanced electronics, DSG automatic transmissions, and the 4MOTION all-wheel-drive system for select models. By the time of the seventh generation (B7, 2010–2014), Volkswagen further refined the design and technology, making the Passat more competitive in global markets.

Recent Generations and Shift in Strategy (2015–Present)
The eighth-generation Passat (B8, 2015–2024) was built on Volkswagen’s MQB platform, offering improved efficiency, a plug-in hybrid (Passat GTE), and advanced driver assistance features. This model was larger, more fuel-efficient, and technologically advanced, appealing to both fleet and private buyers. However, as consumer demand shifted toward SUVs and electric vehicles, Volkswagen announced in 2022 that the sedan version would be discontinued in Europe, while the station wagon (Variant) would continue. In North America, the Passat was discontinued after the 2022 model year, with Volkswagen shifting focus to SUVs like the Atlas and electric vehicles.

A Legacy of Practicality and Innovation
With over 30 million units sold worldwide, the Volkswagen Passat remains one of the most successful midsize cars in history. Despite the decline of traditional sedans, the Passat Variant (wagon) continues in Europe, and Volkswagen is expected to introduce electric successors, such as the upcoming ID.7, to carry on its legacy. As the automotive industry moves toward electrification and SUVs, the Passat's history as a versatile, reliable, and innovative family car secures its place in Volkswagen’s long-standing tradition of excellence.
